Choosing Your Interior Paint Color
As the owner of Downs Property Maintenance combined with over 20 years of experience in the field. I am going to give you my professional opinion on how to pick the best color for your interior paint project. Before we get into considering our color options lets talk a little bit about paint in general. There are many different brands of interior paint on the market like Sherwin-Williams, PPG(Pittsburgh Paints), Valspar, Glidden, Behr, Benjamin Moore, and probably a hundred more. In my professional opinion keeping in mind, this is based on what I’ve seen and used throughout my career. The top three brands I would recommend are:
- Sherwin-Williams– Excellent Paint Good For Commercial & Residential Applications- I would recommend their Cashmere Line to homeowners.
- PPG(Pittsburgh Paint Group)– Excellent Paint Good For Commercial & Residential Applications- I would recommend their Speed Hide Line for homeowners.
- Behr– Good Paint for homeowners to use, I personally wouldn’t use it on any of my jobs unless the customer absolutely wanted us to. I would recommend their Premium Plus Paint & Primer Line for homeowners.
Those are the three interior paint brands I would personally use and recommend to any of my clients. Keep in mind this not an end all be all, this is solely based on my experience and preferences.
Four Major Types Of Interior Paint
You need to consider what type of interior paint you are going to use on your project after you decide what brand to use. For interior paint applications, there are four major types of paint to choose from. Choosing the right type of paint is just as important as choosing the proper interior paint color and brand. Below is a list of the 4 major types of interior paint and proper use:
- Flat Paint– Flat paint has absolutely no sheen(shine) to the interior paint. Most commonly used for ceilings. Flat paint can be used on walls but is not advisable as it isn’t washable.
- Eggshell Paint– Eggshell paint has a very slight sheen(shine) to it but not much. Most commonly used on interior walls in rooms like bedrooms, living room, dining room, etc… Eggshell paint is washable as it does have a slight sheen.
- Satin Paint– Satin Paint has a medium sheen(shine) to it, it is slightly more shiny than eggshell but not as shiny as semi-gloss. Satin paint has the same uses as the eggshell in interior paint projects and is washable.
- Semi-Gloss Paint– Semi-Gloss Paint has the most sheen(shine) to it in our list of interior paint types. Semi-Gloss paint is most commonly used for kitchen and bathroom walls as it does have more of a protective coating. Semi-Gloss is also used for baseboards, trim, and doors. Semi-Gloss is also washable.
Now that you know that 4 major types of interior paint and what they’re most commonly used for, you will be making a more informed decision when choosing your interior paint color.
Let’s Pick Our Interior Paint Color
So we have talked choosing a good brand or interior paint as well as picking the right type of interior paint before starting your project. Now we are ready to choose the interior paint color. Lucky for you there are some tools to aid you in you the color choosing process. As you see in the picture above with the women painters holding the color cards up to the wall. That is one way to help you decide what color of interior paint to choose as you can hold it up to your walls, decor, tile, countertops, cabinets, and so on. You can get those color cards at any paint store, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc…
Another way to choose your paint color is to use a fan deck as seen to the left. You can get a color fan deck at your local paint store. These fan decks will have every color that particular paint store or brand has to offer aside from custom colors of course. Just like the paint color cards you can use the fan deck to aid you in making your final decision of which interior paint color you would like to choose. The fan deck is nice to have as like mentioned above it will contain all the colors a particular brand has to offer in a nice neat compact package, instead of having a bunch of loose color cards.
Another tool for choosing interior paint colors is ColorSnap from Sherwin-Williams. This is an amazing tool for homeowners as you can upload an image of the room you are planning on painting and change the color of the walls to any of Sherwin-Williams 1,500 colors of paint. This particular tool is for desktop users but they also have an Android/iPhone version of ColorSnap that will allow you to do the same thing.
Like Sherwin-Williams has the ColorSnap tool to help aid in choosing the perfect paint color for your interior paint project so does Pittsburgh Paints. PPG’s Color Visualizer will allow you to virtually paint a room in your home by uploading a photo of the room. Both of these tools are super helpful in helping to choose the perfect paint color.
